East Harlem Tutorial Program Staff Member Glenn Wright Killed

Dear Neighbor:

Unfortunately, I write you with extremely upsetting news regarding a member of the East Harlem Tutorial Program family.

5pm Saturday evening, former EHTP student and current staff Glenn Wright was stabbed twice in the neck while washing his grandmother’s windows on the Lower East Side, in what appears to have been a tragic case of mistaken identity. With his family, friends, and many of us from EHTP by his side, he passed away yesterday afternoon.

A suspect has been apprehended who has, according to police, stated he thought Glenn was someone else who lived in the building who had gotten in a fight with his friend at a local high school that day.

Many special young people walk through EHTP’s doors, but Glenn was truly one of the most beloved and special kids that we have ever had the privilege of serving. He was one of the founding robotics team members, and saw a dream of his fulfilled with their trip to the National Championship. He has continued to work with every team since, often as a volunteer. EHTP pulled his academic life out of disarray - Glenn and EHTP worked tirelessly and ensured he graduated high school on time. He has been enrolled in college, working at EHTP, and pursuing his love of art and photography, all while acting as a primary caretaker for his 13 year-old special needs brother, dropping him off and picking him up everyday.

Like so many of our students, Glenn always had to take on responsibilities and emotions beyond his age. Glenn’s mother passed away a while back, he lived in poverty his whole life. His father was not home often as he worked multiple jobs. But through all this, I have rarely met a more gentle or happy or impressive young man. He was one of the very first students I got to know at EHTP, and he was a very special friend to me and so many of our staff.

There will be a vigil in his memory at EHTP for students, friends and family tomorrow evening (Tuesday, September 15, 2009), tentatively scheduled for 5pm. Additionally, EHTP is collecting and donating emergency funds to help his family with funeral arrangements. More details are to come as we learn more.
